BitReplica is a simple backup solution from the well-known vendor Auslogics. To schedule regular (or one-time) backups, users need to create tasks, which in BitReplica are called Profiles. However, creating new tasks is very easy thanks to the step-by-step template. As a storage for backups - local or removable drives can be used. To save free space on disk, BitReplica can sync backups with a cloud storage if its client is installed on the device. Another strong side of BitReplica is in 5 available types of backups: full, incremental, differential, simple and exact. System, hidden and other files with special attributes can be excluded using the Advanced backup options. Also, with their help, users can exclude (by type) certain files or configure launching third-part applications before or after backup creation. The trial version has limited restoring features, and can be used only for 3 backups.

    BitReplica Pros

    • Apps launching scheduler
    • Separated log for every task
    • 2 lists of excluded files

This is an all-in-one utility that allows you to cope with different tasks, from common data zip/unzip and conversion to data encryption and backups. Files and Actions tabs make the program more modern in terms of design and more practical in terms of usage. The Backup tab comes up with 9 ready-made backup presets and allows us to create the new one. WinZip performs 6-step plan creation, including backup modes selection, compression, encryption types, final file specification, settings review, and ability to set some tasks after the process ends. Cloud storage is also supported, and unlike most competitors, it supplies the cloud synchronization feature. The main drawback is paid backup tools, which are available only in the Pro version. Even the Standard license doesn't provide basic features.

FBackup is a free backup utility by SoftLand, the Backup4All developer. This is a small program, with fast performance. In addition to supporting standard backup and recovery features, it provides protection against ransomware and viruses, such as WannyCry. FBackup deserves high user ratings, which indicate the high-quality work on the product, conducted by SoftLand. It comes up with 2 basic backup types: full and mirror. The first creates a zip file with all source files and folders, and the second one makes an identical copy without the compression process. There is a possibility of creating several backup plans (up to 20) and managing them using different options. All produced items are divided into 5 categories for better user experience: all jobs, failed, warnings, running, and scheduled. Generally, this program is rather suitable for simple tasks.

Backblaze started in 2007, in 2014 they hit 100 Petabytes of storage (1 PB = 1024 TB) with 30K hard drives. By 2020 Backblaze hit 1 Exabyte of files stored (1 EB = 1024 PB). Backblaze provides data encryption that has to be decrypted with a private key. In addition, Backblaze has a computer tracker on its website - called Locate My Computer, and it is similar to Apple’s Find My Mac. This is a creation of the German ASCOMP Software company specializing in developing data instruments. The developers managed to fit a lot of functionality into a relatively simple and intuitive interface. To keep your backups safe, Backup Maker provides a possibility to set the password on the created backup and use one of the 4 encryption modes: PkZip v2.0 or AES 128 / 192 / 256 - bit. Each user can define specific actions that will be performed before/after the backup process has started/finished. If the backup file is too large, then the Split feature should be used as well. The data can be divided into equal parts in ZIP (100 / 250 / 750 MB), ISO9660 (2 GB), or CD/DVD (from 650 MB), etc. Created backup files can be saved on local storage, specific discs, or FTP servers.

    BackUp Maker Pros

    • Intelligent compression
    • Detailed visual guides to create backups
    • 12-steps configuration

    BackUp Maker Cons

Backup software are the programs that allow you to create full or partial backup copies of important files and systems. Modern versions of these programs support various backup algorithms to reduce space. The user can encrypt or set password access to critical copies, and upload them to various media, including the cloud. There are several reasons why you might lose important files:

  1. Accidental deletion of the files
  2. Failure of the system
  3. Hackers attacks

Here are some facts:

  1. 93% of companies that lost their data center for ten days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster - Source.
  2. 140.000 hard drives fail in the US each week - Source.
  3. It is reported, that about 70% of businessmen have experienced (or will experience) data loss due to accidental deletion, disk or system failure, viruses, fire or some other disaster.
  4. 20% of companies that experienced data loss said it cost them between $50,000 and $5 million.
  5. 67% of data loss is caused by hard drive crashes or system failure - Source.
  6. 78% of small businesses are expected to use cloud storage to back up their data by 2020 - Source.

Modern programs offer three backup algorithms:

  1. Full backup: creates a copy of all files and folders. Requires a lot of space and time.
  2. Differential backup: does not perform full copying, but replaces those that have changed since the last full backup. Allows you to save space, occupied by backups.
  3. Incremental backup: creates an additional file for full backup which contains a modified version of the file / files and allows you to roll back the file to the version you want, without changing the main (full) backup.

The most important thing is that the program supports all 3 types of backups. You should also pay attention to the backup protection. Protection can be of three types:

  1. Password: refers directly to the program, which requires a password to gain access to the library or a specific backup.
  2. Encryption: places files for backup in a special encrypted container, which needs a password. The degree of security depends on the encryption algorithm used and the key length, the minimum recommended key length is 128-bit.
  3. Reinforced: together with password access, it implements a high level of security for backups. In addition to controlling the access to backup management, it implements their encryption to prevent unauthorized access from the outside.

Now, common features.

VolumesSplitting into parts is the process for the backup file to be split into several ones, with a smaller size. This is very convenient if you have a limited amount of free space or a small bandwidth channel.

SchedulingScheduling is a small but very important function for any backup program. This feature allows you to schedule and complete backup scenario at a specific time, without user interaction. You can also schedule regular backups, in case you forget about it.

Backup storageFrom the operating system’s point of view, backup files are regular files, but you need to store them properly in order to use them correctly. The most common backup storage locations are:

  1. A physical information carrier - a hard disk of a computer. Very often, many users make the mistake of placing backup on the same physical media from which the backup was made. When it fails, the user risks losing both the files and their copies.
  2. Removable information storage device is the most optimal solution, since the copy is kept separately from the original. While using it, it is important to remember that the period of removable media use depends on the intensity of their use.
  3. Cloud storage - the most convenient solution, since most service providers use reliable equipment and provide significant amounts of free space. We recommend to use it only for encrypted backups.

Backup synchronization. Local synchronization can be performed by combining various methods for creating backups. There are several ways to implement online synchronization:

  1. Synchronization with the cloud: the backup will be placed locally and in the cloud storage. This option is very useful, since it creates two independent copies. But at the same time, security requirements for placing files on third-party resources should be considered.
  2. Synchronization between devices: synchronizes the backup library between devices connected to the account. A convenient method, assuring that the access to devices is really protected.

With best backup software users typically are also able to choose specific file types to save. Devices sync options for backups, that some tools provide, is a top-level stuff. Find summary below.

This is the rule of creating backups, offered by Peter Krogh in "Managing Digital Assets for Photographers", which has spread to all areas of information storage. According to this rule, to ensure high reliability of information preservation, it is necessary to:

  1. Have at least three backup copies of important information.
  2. Two of which should be stored on different physical media.
  3. One of the copies should not be in the same room as the others.

Acronis True Image is a paid software that is available for all major PC platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux. AOMEI Backupper: a free software that has all the necessary basic functionality. Areca Backup is an open-source software which is distributed under the GPL-2 license. Ace Backup: a simple software that helps you create a copy of files in short time.

The analysis of the most popular data operations (using Google Trends) shows that the interest in backups never drops. Requests related to the creation of backups exceed requests for recovery, protection, synchronization and data exchange. It is worth noting that users are least interested in how to protect data, which, when creating large backup libraries, is a threat to their integrity and privacy. In terms of tools that seem to be most popular according to users' search terms, here's what we've found:

backup software tools

For final and main comparison test of backup software we created a 5GB size archive with files. We measured two prime features times - time it took to create a 5Gb backup and time it took to restore that backup. In addition, we also measured time for backup validation in those programs that provide this feature.

Iperius and Aomei ended up as the fastest for copying data, while FBackup and Acronis were the fastest to restore the entire archive. Find full comparison below. And of course, processing speed remains the matter of discussion in terms of relevance for backups as such.

What is the best backup software?

The answer to this question depends on tasks you set for yourself. You can choose the appropriate program from our directory placed above on this page, based on your preferences and budget. There's plenty to choose from.

How to make a copy of installed software?

It's impossible as a separate operation. Programs place their files in multiple directories and in different branches of the registry. You can use the creation of backup media on which your system is located, to save the installed software.

How to backup to external storage?

Most programs allow you to select the location for the backup to be stored. If this option is not available, after creating the backup, transfer it to external media, using standard system tools.

What is automated backup software?
